Cleric says Bible does not forbid the practice, stresses hygiene and mutual consent in marriage

A Ghanaian Presbyterian minister has sparked public debate after declaring that oral sex between married couples is not sinful and is nowhere condemned in the Bible.

Delivering a sermon at the PCG Royal Priesthood Congregation in Abeka, the cleric told his congregation that many Christians unnecessarily avoid certain forms of intimacy because of cultural beliefs rather than biblical teachings.

Using a local analogy to make his point, he asked worshippers, “When you finish eating konkonte in an earthenware bowl, don’t you lick inside the bowl?” drawing laughter while emphasising the importance of enjoyment and connection between partners.

According to the pastor, intimacy within marriage should be explored freely, provided both partners are comfortable. He encouraged couples to communicate openly about their needs and pleasures, noting that some women feel reluctant to engage in oral sex due to concerns about personal hygiene or fear of being judged.

He stressed, however, that such practices must never be forced.

“What is wrong is when one partner pressures the other into doing something they are not comfortable with,” he cautioned, adding that mutual consent is essential in any marital relationship.

The preacher also addressed concerns about health risks, explaining that problems only arise from poor hygiene, not from the act itself. He acknowledged that many Christians shy away from oral sex because of long-held religious narratives and cultural conditioning, but maintained that scripture does not prohibit it.

His remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with some applauding his openness about marital intimacy, while others criticised the sermon as inappropriate for the pulpit.
