Content creator reflects on leaving school early, choosing a mature partner, and building a family without marriage

Ghanaian content creator Obolo has shared a deeply personal account of her life journey, revealing how dropping out of school at an early stage shaped major decisions in her adulthood, including entering a long-term relationship with a much older man and remaining unmarried for more than three decades.
Speaking on The Delay Show, Obolo disclosed that she dropped out of school after Class 6, explaining that fear and lack of confidence in her academic ability prevented her from continuing to Junior Secondary School (JSS).
“I became a school dropout because I wasn’t brilliant. I was scared,” she admitted.
According to her, leaving school forced her into early independence, pushing her into trading and informal work environments where she was exposed to adult responsibilities far earlier than her peers.
It was during this phase of her life, while living in Koforidua, that she met her partner. Obolo said she was about 21 years old at the time, while the man was approximately 35.
Although she initially struggled with the age difference, she said his consistency, maturity and sense of responsibility eventually won her over.
“I later realised it was better to have a mature person as a husband,” she explained.
Despite being together for decades, the relationship was never formalised through marriage. Obolo revealed that although her partner had expressed interest in marrying her, circumstances at different points in their lives delayed the plan until it never materialised.
The couple, however, went on to build a family together and lived as partners for 34 years. Their first child, she noted, is now 34 years old, mirroring the length of their union.
Obolo’s story, shared candidly on national television, has resonated with many viewers, shedding light on the long-term impact of early educational challenges, societal expectations and the complex realities of relationships shaped by circumstance rather than convention.
