A 54-year-old mason, Isaac Adonteng, is in the custody of the Weija Divisional Police Command following the death of his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng, at their home in Kokrobite.
A police statement issued in Accra said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly subjected the victim to physical assault after accusing her of taking food intended for a younger sibling.
The suspect is also reported to have confined the girl and failed to seek medical attention after she showed signs of serious distress, according to the statement.
A police team acting on a complaint visited the residence and found the child unconscious. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Police Hospital. Her body has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police retrieved a cutlass and a metal pipe from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned parents and guardians against the use of excessive force in disciplining children, stating that such acts are unlawful. The public is urged to report cases of child abuse and domestic violence to the police.
