The famed Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena, whose real name is George Kwabena Adu, has disclosed that he wrote his breakout song “Aso” while riding a trotro, a type of public transportation.
The singer said that he wrote the song’s lyrics while attending Accra Technical University, now Accra Polytechnic, in an exclusive interview with Giovanni Caleb on TV3’s Showbiz 360.
Many of the songs on the record were composed when he was commuting every day, he said. He clarified that when school let out, he would frequently walk to Circle from campus before catching a St. John’s bus back home.
Approximately 70 to 80 percent of the record was composed while riding the trotro, according to Kwabena, who expressed that such moments became his creative place.
I wrote “Aso” in a trotro. I think I wrote between 70 and 80 percent of the tracks on that CD. I was enrolled at Accra Poly at that time. He remarked, “I would walk from the school campus to Circle after school and then catch a St. John’s bus to return home.”
