Students of KNUST SHS protest over the death of colleague who was neglected by their teachers for fear of contracting COVID-19

Some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School on Tuesday staged a protest against the school authorities after the death of their colleague.

According to the students, one of their colleagues who had an ulcer and was ill was not attended to adequately by the school authorities.

They believe the authorities feared he had contracted the novel coronavirus and as a result, did not attend to him hours leading to his death.

The students then started demonstrating to register their displeasure with the school authorities. As part of the protest, they vandalized the headmistress’ car.

It took the intervention of police personnel who were deployed to the school to help maintain calm.

One of the students in an interview with the media said:

“The senior housemaster told his [the deceased boy’s] friends to leave him alone. He told them to sanitize their hands and asked them why they were holding the boy and gave them the plot to weed [as punishment].”

“The headmistress herself came to stand in front of this boy and the boy was rolling on the floor for more than four hours. They couldn’t call any car to take him to the hospital.”

The police have been sent to the school to ensure law and order.
